Tremors 3: Back To Perfection (2001) - 5/10

Gareth Crook

My Tremors marathon continues with Part 3, where we head back to Perfection. Will returning to the scene of the first film help after the messy sequel that disappointed me last time out? Micheal Gross is back, this time as the star. Burt is now not only a survivalist conspiracy nut, but a Graboid & Shrieker expert… and he’s more tooled up than ever. Returning to Perfection, he finds that home isn’t what it was. Burt likes isolation, but the town is now on the tourist map. Thanks in part to folks like Desert Jack (Shawn Christian). There’s no Graboids in the valley (for now), but Jack has a flair for the theatrical. Instantly I like him more than Burt. Jodi (Susan Chuang) is now running her father’s store, Nancy (Charlotte Stewart) is still making pots and her daughter Mindy (Ariana Richards) is all grown up. When Jack first encounters a real Graboid and it eats his mate, it’s all hands on deck and Burts time to shine. This could be bad news on many fronts, but everyone treating Burt like the local loon makes it rather fun. The last film had zero energy and the story just didn’t go anywhere. This does fair a little better. I’ll credit this mostly to Desert Jack. He’s understood the brief and leans into the crazy adventure. Everyone else struggles though and as the Graboids turn into Shriekers, mutate into flying Ass-Blasters (you read right) and then lay eggs for more Graboids, it’ll all gets a bit muddled. It is fun and funny though, utterly bonkers and oddly watchable, even with the terrible CGI. It’s still crap, but in that so bad it’s good sort of way. It’s not saying much, but it’s certainly better than Tremors 2. I’m wondering if I dare hope for more with Tremors 4.
