The Commitments (1991)

Updated: Jul 31, 2019

So as a palette cleanser after Sunshine on Leith, we thought we’d rewatch The Commitments. Not really a musical, but a film about and with a lot of music. A film with strong well written characters. A film with great songs. A plot that’s simple but holds up with grit and wit. A film that despite being 26 years old, still feels fun, fresh and on the whole bloody fantastic. Despite the comedic delivery there’s a realism that makes this all the more entertaining. Whilst I’m banging on about musicals, director Alan Parker was also responsible for Evita... which was also crap. So just goes to show, no one’s perfect... but this just about is.
