Queen of Katwe (2016)

Today’s film was much better. Still a little sentimental in places, but then this is a Disney retelling of a true story. Phiona Mutesi is a young Ugandan girl from the slums, struggling with her family, when her newly discovered chess abilities unexpectedly allow her new opportunities. It’s quite hard hitting in places and although Ethan was captivated by the whole chess premise, being immersed in the poverty all around he clearly found tougher to watch. It took us a while to get to the end too as he insisted on pausing every time a board was shown so he could dissect the play!

7/10
