A beautifully eloquent documentary by Werner Herzog. The man himself barely appears on screen, but that wonderful voice is more than sufficient to carry this. The story told is incredible, informative and even funny (Hetzog style). The underwater recordings of seals are truly amazing, "like Pink Floyd or something", very cool!! But this film is as much about the people doing mind blowing work at the South Pole as it is the pole itself and the world there. These people are quite fascinating, full of life and crazy stories in a world of seeming starkness. Free diving untethered below a sheet of ice the size of Texas and 9 ft thick is terrifying, almost as terrifying as some of the creatures they film down there! It's utterly fascinating.
