Spielberg, Aliens, this will be good right? The question really is, how does he wrap it this time? Daniel (Josh O’Conner) is embroiled in something with his girlfriend, Jane (Eve Henson) and Colin Firth isn’t happy about it, he’s Daniel’s ex-boss, Noah Scanlon, bad guy. The embroiled something appears to be stolen information, something Daniel’s mate, Hugo (Colman Domingo) wants to control… ooo I wonder what it could be? Meanwhile, strange things are happening to weather presenter, Margaret (Emily Blunt). She’s feeling a bit directionless, but she’s about to get a whole lots of direction, pulling her every which way. Margaret is different, but until now, she didn’t know how different. Margaret you see, can communicate in ways that are beyond human comprehension… human. The set up is good. Obvious but good. The US Military utilising alien tech and Daniel is the whistleblower. It’s got a bit of grit, but the Spielberg kind, y’know, a bit dark, but not too scary, delivering an accessible thriller. The race is on. Can Scanlon, thwart Daniel and Margaret and open the world’s eyes, whilst Spielberg romps through a series of spectacular set pieces that raise the pulse and pull the heartstrings. It takes its time. Which isn’t a problem as such, it’s just a bit bloated. It’s two and a half hours for gods sake, it just doesn’t need that. There’s a lovely idea here and it really does blossom. Yes it holds the audiences hand a little too much and yes it’s confused as what  it wants to be, but it does largely stay on track through a dizzying narrative of pure wonder. Blunt and O’Connor are great, the supporting cast all competent. Firth isn’t terrible, he’s just not a plausible bad guy, not here at least. It all looks amazing of course and honestly if it were a bit tighter, it might be brilliant, but it’s still very good and in places, genuinely powerful. It’s fun, builds well and goes exactly where you’d hoped. Spielberg won’t let you down, but an instant classic it is not.
