What an absolute delight this is. It probably helps if you’re of a certain age and grew up watching Wile E. Coyote being foiled by Roadrunner, but it’s not essential. What’s more important was acknowledging it wasn’t just Roadrunner that was brilliant, or Coyote being inept (albeit also invincible), the reason Roadrunner always got that the last “meep”… was ACME! This looks like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but the comparisons end there, for this is a much better film. Coyote heads to the city after seeing a small time lawyer promising payouts on TV, that lawyer is Kevin Avery (Will Forte), assisted by his overly enthusiastic intern, Paige (Lana Condor). Coyote doesn’t talk of course, but gets his point across with his trusty signs, explaining in his own innovative way, his grievances against the titular bad guys. Honestly it’s so charming, I’m sold before we even get to the main plot anchor. That being that Coyote wants to take ACME for all they’ve got, even if Kevin is terrified and dismissive of the challenge. The casting is great, fun, playful. It’s not often you can say that John Cena is perfect, but he is as ACME’s bullying lawyer. Everyone is scared of him… except Coyote!!Gathering proof, building the case, cameos from everyone from Daffy Duck to Tweety Pie, it’s a wild rollercoaster, that reveals just how corrupt ACME is… but is that what Coyote really wants? Yes it’s packed with comedy slapstick, yes the cartoons characters blow their human counterparts away, but there’s genuine heart to this and enough moral compass to give it some real bite. Not to mention enough easter eggs, nods and winks to keep even the most cynical viewer entertained. Is it perfect, no, but is it close, yes. It’s wonderfully funny, a love letter to Looney Tunes and a great story in its own right.
