Companion (2025) - 7/10

Gareth Crook

Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and Josh (Jack Quaid) head to a weekend lakeside retreat with friends. Josh’s friends, not Iris’. She’s nervous, seems fragile, but there’s something about her, possibly dangerous. Josh is a bit annoying, well he’s a cold hearted arse really. Maybe not as annoying as Kat (Megan Suri) who doesn’t like Iris, but at least doesn’t hide it. Kat is with Sergey (Rupert Friend), a mullet haired amorous Russian whose large house it is. The final couple are Eli (Harvey Guillén) and Patrick (Lukas Gage) but let’s not get ahead, not everyone will see the weekend out. It’s clear that Iris is not what she seems. Or rather is what she seems. Like I said, dangerous. Iris you see is a robot companion. Although she doesn’t know that or didn’t until things go pear shaped, but did they go pear shaped or was this all planned. Honestly the set up feels a little clunky, but it’s entertaining, fast paced and once Iris is free, things get… better. It is interesting. It is fun. It looks good. It’s well acted. Its only issue is aside Iris, everyone is pretty loathsome. The narrative feels familiar. Don’t underestimate the machines. Humans are morally bankrupt etc. but for all its flaws and predictability, it’s got style and Thatcher does a great job and is wonderful to watch. There’s not much else to say, but if you like a solid but lighthearted sci-fi thriller, this is for you.
